About this tool

YouTube tags are the metadata field in Studio, separate from hashtags and separate from the title. YouTube itself describes them as useful mainly when a topic is commonly misspelled, and treats them as a minor signal. That makes restraint the right approach: a focused set of accurate tags that describe the video, well within the 500-character field limit.

How it works

The topic is used as the first and most important tag, since exact-match relevance matters more than volume. Individual words become broader category tags, and a set of common variations — tutorial, for beginners, how to, tips, guide, step by step — cover the phrasings viewers use. You can append channel or series tags of your own. The tool counts total characters against the 500 budget so you know when to stop.

  1. 1Enter the topic of the video.
  2. 2Add your channel name, series name or any custom tags.
  3. 3Set a maximum tag count.
  4. 4Generate, check the character total, and copy the comma-separated tag string into Studio.

Example

Input

sourdough bread baking

Output

sourdough bread baking, sourdough, bread, baking, sourdough bread baking tutorial

When to use it

  • Filling the tag field consistently across a video series.
  • Adding common misspellings and alternative wordings of a niche term.
  • Including channel and series tags on every upload.
  • Preparing metadata in advance for a batch of scheduled videos.

Tips

  • Put the exact topic phrase first — it is the tag most likely to matter.
  • Include misspellings only when your niche genuinely has them.
  • Never tag a video with an unrelated popular topic; that is a policy violation, not a shortcut.

Limitations

Tags will not rank a video on their own. YouTube weights the title, description, thumbnail and viewer behaviour far more heavily. Hashly cannot check which tags competitors use or how often a tag is searched, and stuffing irrelevant tags breaches YouTube's spam policies.

Frequently asked questions

How many tags should a YouTube video have?
There is no ideal number. The field holds around 500 characters in total; a focused, accurate set well inside that is plenty.
Do tags affect rankings?
YouTube has said tags play a minimal role, mostly helping with commonly misspelled terms. Title, description and viewer retention matter far more.
Are tags the same as hashtags?
No. Tags live in a Studio metadata field and are not visible to viewers. Hashtags go in the description and are publicly clickable.
