About this tool

Exported keyword lists are messy. They arrive with trailing spaces, inconsistent capitalisation, stray punctuation from spreadsheet quoting and the same phrase repeated in three different cases. The Keyword Cleaner applies all the tidying steps you would otherwise do by hand in a text editor, in one pass, without your data ever leaving the browser.

How it works

Operations run in a fixed, safe order. Whitespace is collapsed and trimmed first so later comparisons are accurate. Special characters are stripped if you asked for it, keeping letters, numbers, spaces and hyphens. Case conversion is applied next, then blank lines are dropped, then duplicates are removed case-insensitively, and finally the list can be sorted alphabetically. Because deduplication happens after case conversion, choosing lowercase will correctly collapse Best Running Shoes and best running shoes into one entry.

  1. 1Paste the raw list from your spreadsheet, export or notes.
  2. 2Tick the cleaning operations you want applied.
  3. 3Pick a case if you need consistency across the list.
  4. 4Generate, check the before-and-after counts, then export.

Example

Input

' Best Running Shoes ', 'best running shoes', '', 'cycling!! shoes'

Output

best running shoes · cycling shoes

When to use it

  • Preparing a messy export before importing it into a planning tool.
  • Normalising case so duplicate detection actually works.
  • Stripping punctuation artefacts left by CSV quoting.
  • Producing a clean alphabetical list for a client deliverable.

Tips

  • Convert to lowercase before deduplicating — it usually removes far more than you expect.
  • Keep special-character stripping off for non-English lists until you have checked a sample.
  • The removed count is a quick quality signal: a huge number means your source needs attention upstream.

Limitations

Cleaning is textual. It cannot detect that two phrases mean the same thing with different words, and stripping special characters will also remove accented punctuation and symbols that matter in some languages. Check the output before overwriting your source file.

Frequently asked questions

Is my list uploaded anywhere?
No. Every operation runs in your browser and Hashly stores no keyword data. Closing the tab discards everything.
Does removing special characters break hyphenated words?
No, hyphens are preserved deliberately because they are common in real keywords. Other punctuation is removed.
Why is deduplication case-insensitive?
Because search engines do not distinguish case in queries, so two phrases differing only by capitalisation are the same keyword in practice.
