About this tool
Counting hashtags matters for two reasons: platforms enforce limits, and duplicated tags waste slots you could have used on something useful. The Hashtag Counter gives you the total, the unique count, the number of repeats and the character cost, and compares your total against the documented limit for the platform you pick.
How it works
The text is scanned with a unicode-aware hashtag pattern that matches letters, numbers and underscores after a hash. Every match is counted, then lowercased to find duplicates, since platforms treat tags case-insensitively. Character usage is calculated on the joined tag block so you can see how much of a caption budget the tags consume. Where a platform publishes a hard limit — thirty for Instagram, sixty for YouTube descriptions — your total is shown against it.
- 1Paste your caption or hashtag block.
- 2Select the platform you are posting to.
- 3Generate to see totals, duplicates and character cost.
- 4Trim duplicates and copy the unique list if you need a clean set.
Example
Input
#coffee #espresso #coffee #barista
Output
Total 4 · Unique 3 · Duplicates 1
When to use it
- Checking a caption fits inside Instagram's thirty-tag limit before posting.
- Finding wasted duplicate tags in a long block.
- Measuring how many caption characters your tags consume on TikTok.
- Auditing a scheduled post batch for tag bloat.
Tips
- Duplicates are always waste — remove them and add a relevant tag instead.
- On TikTok, watch the character cost more than the count.
- Run the unique list through the Hashtag Cleaner to standardise case first.
Limitations
Only documented, stable platform limits are shown, and platforms change their rules without notice. The counter does not judge tag quality, popularity or whether a tag is restricted.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Instagram's hashtag limit?
- Instagram documents a maximum of thirty hashtags per post. Exceeding it can prevent the caption from posting.
- Does YouTube limit hashtags?
- YouTube ignores hashtags entirely when a description contains more than sixty of them, which effectively makes sixty the practical ceiling.
- Are duplicate tags harmful?
- They are not penalised as far as anyone has confirmed, but they occupy a slot and a few characters for no benefit.
