About this tool
On platforms where the caption and the hashtags share one character budget, long tags are expensive. A twenty-eight-character compound tag costs the same as a short sentence. This counter measures exactly what your tag block consumes — total characters, average tag length and your longest offenders — and can add your caption to show the combined total.
How it works
Every hashtag is matched, then measured including its hash symbol. The tag block length is calculated as the tags joined with single spaces, which is how they would appear in a post. Averages and the maximum are computed across the set, and the five longest tags are listed so you know what to cut first. Supplying a caption adds its length and a combined total, compared against Instagram's documented 2,200-character caption budget.
- 1Paste your hashtag set.
- 2Optionally paste the caption you plan to publish with it.
- 3Generate to see the character breakdown.
- 4Trim the longest tags if the combined total is tight.
Example
Input
#coffee #espressoMachine #homeBarista
Output
3 hashtags · 37 characters · average 11.7 chars
When to use it
- Fitting a TikTok caption and tags into the shared budget.
- Deciding which compound tags to shorten.
- Checking a long Instagram caption plus tags stays under 2,200 characters.
- Comparing the character cost of two candidate tag sets.
Tips
- Cut the longest tags first — they free the most room per tag removed.
- On TikTok, the caption hook matters more than an extra tag.
- Run the set through the Duplicate Checker first; repeats are pure character waste.
Limitations
Character budgets vary by platform and change over time; only Instagram's documented caption limit is shown here. Emoji and some non-Latin characters can count as more than one character in certain platform implementations, so treat the total as very close rather than exact.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the hash symbol count?
- Yes. Platforms count every character in the caption field, including hash symbols and the spaces between tags.
- How are emoji counted?
- This tool counts JavaScript string length, which can differ from a platform's own count for some emoji and scripts. Leave a small margin.
- What is Instagram's caption limit?
- Instagram documents a 2,200-character caption limit, shared between your text and hashtags.
