Instagram Hashtag Strategy

How to organise hashtag sets for feed posts, Reels and carousels without turning your captions into keyword soup.
Treat tags as topic labels
Instagram surfaces content through topic understanding, and hashtags are one of the clearest signals you control. Sets that accurately describe the subject, the style and the community help the platform place your post in front of people who follow or browse those topics.
Where creators go wrong is treating tags as a lottery ticket. A giant block of the most-used tags on the platform places your post in feeds moving too fast for anyone to notice, and tells Instagram very little about what you actually made.
Build sets per content pillar
Rather than one universal block, build a small set for each content pillar you post about. If you cover recipes, kitchen gear and restaurant reviews, that is three sets. Each one gets its own niche layer, and each can be adjusted in seconds before posting.
Keep each set stored somewhere you can edit — a note, a doc, or generated fresh from your caption using a caption keyword extractor.
Placement and readability
Tags can sit at the end of the caption or in the first comment; both are widely used and neither is a trick. What matters more is that the caption itself reads well to a human. If tags clutter it, put them below a few line breaks so the caption's first line stays clean — that first line is what stops the scroll.
Frequently asked questions
- Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
- Either works. Choose based on readability — many accounts keep captions clean and move a long tag block to the first comment.
- Do I need thirty hashtags on every post?
- No. Use as many as are genuinely relevant. A precise set of twelve outperforms thirty tags where half are unrelated.
