About this tool
Keyword density is the share of a text taken up by a particular word or phrase. It used to be treated as a lever; today it is best understood as a mirror. If your target phrase never appears, the page may genuinely be about something else. If it appears in every other sentence, the copy probably reads badly. This checker gives you the numbers so you can make that judgement yourself.
How it works
The text is tokenised into words. If you supply a target phrase, the tool scans for consecutive matches of that exact word sequence and reports the number of occurrences plus the density, calculated as matched words divided by total words. Alongside that, it always lists the fifteen most frequent two-word phrases in the text with their own densities, so you can see what the copy actually emphasises rather than only what you hoped it would.
- 1Paste the text you want to check.
- 2Optionally enter the exact phrase you are targeting.
- 3Generate to see word count, occurrences and density.
- 4Review the top phrases table to see the text's real emphasis.
Example
Input
A 40-word paragraph containing 'keyword research' twice
Output
Occurrences: 2 · Density: 10.00%
When to use it
- Sanity-checking that a draft mentions its subject at all.
- Spotting accidental repetition that makes copy feel laboured.
- Comparing the emphasis of two drafts of the same page.
- Reviewing a writer's submission before publishing.
Tips
- If density is above roughly three percent, read the text aloud — repetition usually becomes audible.
- Look at the top-phrases table before the target number; it tells you more.
- Use synonyms and natural variations rather than repeating one exact phrase.
Limitations
No search engine publishes a density target, and matching an arbitrary percentage will not improve rankings. The matcher also looks for the exact word sequence, so plurals and reordered wording are counted separately. Treat every number here as descriptive.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a good keyword density?
- There is no official figure. Write naturally, mention the topic where it belongs, and use this tool to catch extremes rather than to hit a target.
- Does it count plurals and variants?
- No. It matches the exact word sequence you enter. Run the tool again with the variant if you want to count it.
- Can high density hurt my page?
- Unnaturally repetitive text can be treated as spam and it certainly harms readability. The safer approach is to write for the reader and use density only as a check.
